Horna destroys favourite Kuerten in the quarterfinals of the Copa Argentina in Buenos Aires.
The Peruvian Luis Horna surprised everyone at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club and won easily over one of the main candidates for the title in the third Copa Argentina competition, - the Brazilian Gustavo "Guga" Kuerten.
Already well after midnight, and with Diego Maradona in the stands supporting the man from Rio de Janeiro, Horna surprised everyone by playing tennis at a very high level. He beat the ex-World Number 1 by an emphatic 6-2, 6-0. While many dreamed of a final showdown between David Nalbandian and Gustavo Kuerten, Horna destroyed the illusion of the majority, and in the semifinals he will face Argentine Agustín Calleri, who he has already beaten in the 2005 Motorola Cup exhibtion match in Lima a few weeks back.
Horna, the World Number 84, broke Kuertens’s serve in first game and took a fast advantage. It was noticeable that "Guga" was not up to his usual standard and made many errors, while Horna made precise shots right on the lines, and played with good changes of pace. Therefore, the Peruvian broke serve again in the seventh game and took the first set comfortably. The public cheered constantly for the Brazilian - something strange considering his nationality! Nevertheless, there was no reaction from him and the second Set was so one-sided it appeared like a rout. "Guga" was very poor in his execution of his shots, and very far from the level that made him a triple champion at Roland Garros and a former World Number 1. He did not show great fighting spirit in the second set, while Horna did not relax for one moment – in fact he raised his level and his superiority was every greater. He closed out the set 6-0 and took his victory deservedly. Luis Horna is now living through a good moment and it seems that he is taking these friendly matches very seriously, and if he can take that commitment and desire further, he has serious chances of being the foreigner who breaks the tradition and wins the latest Copa Argentina.
