YORKSHIRE'S top player Jonathan Marray has pledged to retire from professional tennis unless he can improve his ranking significantly.

The Sheffield-born player is currently the world No 259 - and the British No 8 - and he knows that time is running out if he is to achieve his goal of reaching the top 100.

The LTA's performance director David Felgate said: "Jonny's edging up but he's had some injuries. I don't know. If you're a betting man, the older you get, the odds are stacked against you. But that's not to say you can't make a living." However, buoyed by two battling defeats in the main draw at Wimbledon in the last two years, Marray feels that he has the ability to take a significant step forward.

"I think I can get there," said Marray, who took former semi-finalist Xavier Malisse to five sets in the first round at Wimbledon this year, having done the same to Karol Beck 12 months earlier. "I wouldn't be playing unless I thought I could get up there. If I thought I would be at this level all the time, I wouldn't be carrying on. But if I think I am improving and getting better, I will carry on. If I feel I am stationary, I will look at other things.

"I've proved that I can play at that level; it's just doing it on a consistent basis. To get your ranking up there, it's about consistency, doing it all year, not just a couple of weeks each year." In the last two seasons, Marray has performed well in the first half of the year - up to Wimbledon - but picked up few ranking points in the summer. This year, he has been unfortunate, suffering from a wrist injury that has largely kept him out of action since the summer - and prevented him from earning.

He admits his agonising defeat at Wimbledon in 2004 affected him badly - he had three match points against Beck.

"It's a comedown afterwards," he said. "Maybe it affected me last year. I had a good run up to Wimbledon, then I had a tight loss and it kind of knocked me. I was so close and then to have it taken away from you - it's like a dream to win at Wimbledon.

"It is encouraging that I'm pushing these guys so far, but it would be nice to win one. It's what you dream of when you're growing up. I'm not used to playing in front of an audience of millions: I only do it once a year." After his moments in the limelight at Wimbledon, Marray returns to the netherworld of the Challenger Tour, where crowds never exceed 200. It can be a lonely existence - he does not travel with a coach, and he must book his own flights and accommodation.

Having barely played in the last six months, though, he is excited about the prospect of returning to action in Australia in the New Year.

Marray would also love to emulate his fellow South Yorkshireman David Sherwood by earning a Davis Cup team place.

He said: "If I can start well and have a better autumn, I could get to the top 150. That's my target. No 210 is the highest I've been but I can get higher.

"And I would love to play Davis Cup. It's up to all of us to stake a claim. If I perform well, I've got a chance."
