DUTCH OPEN TENNIS Amersfoort, The Netherlands July 22, 2007 World No. 297 Darcis Captures Amersfoort Title
Unheralded Belgian qualifier Steve Darcis became the lowest-ranked player in more than three years to win an ATP title after defeating Austria's Werner Eschauer 6-1, 7-6(1) in the final of the Dutch Tennis Open in Amersfoort.
Darcis, ranked No. 297, who was playing in only his second career ATP main draw, is the lowest-ranked player to win a title since No. 349 Tommy Haas won Houston in 2004.
The 23-year-old is the second Belgian (Xavier Malisse) to win an ATP title this year and the fifth first-time winner of 2007.
Darcis's best results this season were back-to-back semifinal appearances at the San Remo and Furth Challengers in May and June. In his two most recent tournaments Darcis suffered first-round losses at the Scheveningen (Netherlands) and Reggio Emilia (Italy) Challengers.
In the semifinals, Darcis (profile), rallied from a set down to stun second-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny 4-6, 6-0, 7-5. Before this week Darcis had played just two career matches at ATP level (none in 2007), losing both.
Lleyton Hewitt is the lowest-ranked winner since 1985. He was No. 550 when he won the 1998 Adelaide title.
Eschauer, 33, who had never before reached an ATP semifinal in his 13-year pro career, had won just 10 ATP-level matches during his career before this week and only three this season. He was playing Amersfoort for the first time.
He was attempting to become the oldest first-time ATP winner since Australian Wayne Arthurs won his first title aged 33 years, 11 months in Scottsdale in 2005.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Darcis: "This was an unbelievable week for me. I still don't realize what I did; it's a great feeling, almost like a dream.
"I was playing good and he was a little bit stressed in the beginning. In the second set he came very close and I'm glad that I made it to the tie-break.
"This might be the best week of my life so far. Now my goal is to reach the Top 100 as soon as possible."
Eschauer: "He started unbelievably well and didn't make any mistakes. It was quite hard for me to get into the match. I had an opportunity to break him at 0-4, but I couldn't make it. In the second I had a few opportunities. If I can take advantage of one, that might have been the turning point."
