Former Roland Garros Finalist Verkerk Retires ATP PLAYER NEWS December 8, 2008
Dutchman Martin Verkerk has announced his retirement from professional tennis, having struggled with various injuries since his unexpected run to the 2003 Roland Garros final.
The former Top 15 player, currently ranked No. 263, expressed that he no longer had the motivation to continue his training, telling Dutch television station NOS: "I do not think that I can return to the highest level."
The 30-year-old Verkerk had not won an ATP match since undergoing arthroscopic right shoulder surgery shortly after capturing his second title in July 2004 at Amersfoort.
Though he won Challenger and Futures level titles on his most recent comeback attempt this past season, the Dutchman was dealt another setback in July at the ATP tournament in Amersfoort. He held three match points against Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the first round match, but was eventually forced to retire after twisting his ankle in the third set.
Verkerk reached a career-high ranking of No. 14 in September 2003, a season highlighted by his first ATP title in Milan and a runner-up finish on his Roland Garros debut. He fired 124 en route to the final at the clay court Slam, posting wins over Carlos Moya and Guillermo Coria before losing to Juan Carlos Ferrero in straight sets.
