Weird Canada didn't score against Russia. From what I saw in the 3rd period, they had plenty of chances. So Canada didn't score in the last three matches?! And you guys were whining about the defense... Canada didn't score in 11 periods out of the last 12 Actually, Canada scored on the powerful and would tie the game if the referee didn't blow his whistle too fast. The puck is still alive but..... That would tie the game and then Pronger wouldn't draw that stupid penalty for Russia to score the second goal. Anyway, Canadians are not going to whine about the officials as we all know the team sucks. Basically, the players could not adjust to the larger ice surface and the officiating in international games. e.g. the game winning goal came from the power play that would not happen in NHL. The way Todd Bertuzzi checked the Russian player behind the net, that would never be called in NHL.

You know, Lee, almost all players from the major teams are from NHL, eg Sweden has 4 non NHL players, one of them a reserve goalie and one of them an ex NHL player.
And I've read that the officiating in NHL is stricter than it is in the Swedish league. Sweden also had some problems, especially in the game against USA, when they had to play 3 vs. 5 twice in the 2nd period.
From what I saw in the game against Russia I still think it was the goalscoring that was Canada's downfall in this tournament. If it had been normal it would at least had been extra time.

But you also have to look into the way players develops before they join NHL. I don't know how Swedish league is officiated but from what I saw, some of the penalties Canada drew would not be called in NHL. I am not saying the officiating is the problem for Canada's fall from grace. The players know that playing international tournaments are going to be different and if they can't adjust to it, that's there problem. That's also one reason for the selection of players. Like Ryan Smyth, Rick Nash, Shane Doan, etc they are picked more or less because they played world championship before (Junior for Nash). Being shutout for 3 of 6 games, no doubt scoring goal was the BIG reason they failed

Well, I'm disappointed, but not surprised, thewriting is on the wall. Somehow, I never thought this Canadian team is a favorite anyway, maybe bcos I didn't really think they pick the right guys, they pick the same guys from last time, but they are 4 years older.
However, I very much disagree that Canadian thinks they are favorite and hence they thought they will win automatically, blah blah blah. We know better than that. Remember that Salt Lake City is the first time we won gold since 1952. That was a 50 years gap. Most of the top teams out there are loaded with NHLers, so there's no reason that we will ever look down on any team. So you have to tell me in what respect that we show we're in any way overconfident? In fact, most of the players are showing a lack of confident, I'm really not sure why, but I still maintain that they coaching staffs should be responsible for the ineffectiveness of the whole team performance. But anyway, they lost and they admitted that they aren't good enough this time around. That's good enough for me. I hope they'll do better next time, in Vancouver ;D.

I'm not sure which one is more upsetting: Canada lost, or Ohlund & Salo injuried. Olly has a broken rib & injuried shoulder & Salo is suspected to have a dislocated shoulder. OUCH! This just really really really sucks. They both are out of the tournament, that suck for them not being able to be there for finish the job for their olympics moment. And that suck for us because we now have 3 veterans Dmen down with serious injuries. We'll have to open the 2nd half of the season playing all rookie Ds .

I'm going to cheer for the Finns and the Swedes, but somehow I think the Russian is going to win, it's just a gut feeling, started at the beginning of the tournament. I like the Czechs chance too. I guess it just seems that the Finns and Swedes are more defensive, and the Russian are more explosive (Ovechkin ). But honestly, I have no idea who will win. But I'm excited about the remaining games.

There is winter in Vancouver? I thought it rained all year long. True. But they are still coming anyway in 2010, can you believe it? ;D BTW, I heard the projected overbudget is now at hundreds of millions. Perhaps some is for buying extra snowmaking machines to ensure that we have a "winter" that year .
