Hamburg: Federer ends Nadal's claycourt streak
Rafael Nadal may go into the French Open starting in a week with a hint of vulnerability after Roger Federer rose up to end the Spaniard's 81-match win streak on clay.
The Swiss took his revenge for five clay losses to the world No. 2 with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 title win at the Hamburg Masters.
The bagel final set stamped the Federer authority on the contest and vindicated the top seed's decision last week to split with coach Tony Roche.
Federer will take a huge lift to Paris, where play begins on Sunday. Nadal had not lost a match on clay since going out to Russia Igor Andreev on April 8, 2005, in the Valencia quarter-finals.
His streak was the longest on any surface in the sport and gave him 13 titles during the winning period. "If I have to lose against someone then he is the man," said the Spaniard. Added Federer: "It's an amazing series and I have a lot of respect for him."
Federer stands an impressive 9-0 record in finals played in Germany and now stands 17-0 in Hamburg.
Victory ended a four-tournament title drought for Federer, his longest since taking over No. l.
